Diestra is an edgy, sophisticated, and feminine brand designed by good friends Otilia Mendez and Denise Munoz.  They create versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched and compliment all types’ women and allows their individual style to shine through.  They are both fascinated by vintage designs, but each have their favorites.  Mendez gravitates toward 60’s era styles and is influenced by current day Spanish rock.  Munoz is intrigued by the fashions of the 1920’s and by many musical artists of the 90’s grunge era.  These inspirations mixed with a modern flair are weaved into many of their pieces.

They met in 2002 as fashion design students at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising/ FIDM and quickly became friends. Munoz later transferred to San Diego Mesa College completing a degree in Fashion Merchandising. Mendez obtained a degree in Fashion Design from FIDM.  After some time, their lives began to take them on different paths. Mendez continued to explore the fashion industry venturing into fashion styling and producing her own fashion shows. Munoz went on to study a career in education obtaining a B.A. in psychology and pursuing a Masters in Counseling. She got married, started a family and began working in education. She also continued to study apparel construction in Mexico. Eventually they crossed paths once again and after a lengthy conversation realized that they were still extremely passionate about fashion and shared the same vision that they talked about when they first met in 2002. In the fall of 2012, the Diestra brand was born after years of planning and waiting.  Fast forward to 2013 and you will see their debut S/S 2014 collection on the runway at Fashion Week San Diego.

Fashion represents the trends occurring in every aspect of our society. It is a collection of ideas, viewpoints, and commentary. It is the most accessible art form, and the most direct and impacting way an individual can make a nonverbal statement. It gives the individual an opportunity to create his or her own story with each outfit. Therefore, fashion means expressing yourself.

[custom_qoute style=”single”]

For Otilia a career in fashion was a no brainier. She simply couldn’t visualize doing anything else in this lifetime. For Denise, it wasn’t as straightforward. As a young kid she dreamed of being a fashion designer, but wasn’t certain she could make a career out of it. So, after completing a degree in fashion she went a different route and began a career in education. As much as she enjoyed that, her passion for and interest in fashion remained. It was clear that the dream was alive and together, Otilia and Denise decided to put their fears aside and just go for it and design their first collection.

[custom_qoute style=”single”]

Our dream would be to find success in the fashion industry. For us, that means having our brand represented in major department stores and shops. We would love our brand to have an international presence and to have the opportunity to expand the brand to include accessories.

[accordion_toggle title=”What do you absolutely love about being a fashion designer?”]

[custom_qoute style=”single”]

One of the things we love about designing is being able to create what we imagine. Garments are evolving art pieces. As a designer, we create something with an idea or story in mind. However, the individual wearing the piece adds to it, creating their own story. It is always interesting and fun to see the different interpretations given to the same garment.

[accordion_toggle title=”What’s the philosophy of your brand?”]

[custom_qoute style=”single”]

Style is unique to each individual. Our brand incorporates pieces that are transitional between seasons and trends. We create pieces that can be styled in different ways and for different occasions. Basically, there are no rules and we want each woman to make it her own. We like contradictions in design, and our brand achieves that by mixing menswear inspired elements that somehow result in a very feminine look.

We are excited to show our very first collection in our hometown, and to have a platform to share our vision with the fashion industry and potential customers. We are certain this will be an intense experience with so many great learning opportunities.
