Fashion Week San Diego welcomes Second Star Designs to the 2013 runway shows with her women’s wear collection. Created by Caryn Stockwell, Second Star Designs’ goal for this collection is twofold:  to raise awareness as to the benefits of organic clothing and to support the growth of those businesses who are working together toward the future of our planet.  The runway designs are brilliantly colored, comfortable and filled with movement; upscale women’s contemporary clothing that is a pleasure to wear … garments that can be composted after they’ve worn out rather than donated or thrown away.  The entire collection is an artistic collaboration under the Second Star Designs label and has been orchestrated to create an unforgettably cohesive look.

Designing clothing has always been a part of her life whether it was selling hand painted clothing in Balboa Park in the 80’s or making clothing for her daughters. Creating clothing has been a part of Stockwell’s family heritage, on her mother’s side, for many generations.  Her Great, Great Grandfather was a milliner in Ireland; her Great Grandparents met in one of the Connecticut textile mills, her Great Grandfather fought for the rights of and unionized the mill workers of the early 1900’s. Her Grandmother made clothing for their family of five children; and her Mother continued the practice of making clothing for our family. With the combination of her heritage and experience, Stockwell has developed unique techniques and designs.

[accordion_toggle title=”What does fashion mean to you?”]

[custom_qoute style=”simple”]

I believe that Fashion is but one of the many methods by which a person may express themselves.  Passion, personality, beliefs, heritage … all aspects of a person can be expressed through the perfect choreography of color, texture, movement and feel found in Fashion.

[accordion_toggle title=”How did you decide to pursue fashion as a career?”]

[custom_qoute style=”single”]

A career in Fashion was not a chosen career path.  Fresh out of high school, I was fascinated with the new computer technology that had just been introduced … I wanted to design and create graphics for computer games.  Fashion never really crossed my mind outside of the shopping malls where I spent every dime I had on the latest fashions.  As time progressed, whenever Life threw a curveball, I found myself falling back upon my natural talents, utilizing the basic skills taught to me by my Mother, creating beautiful garments for other people wanting to purchase them for their very own.   When it happens enough times, you come to the realization and understanding that a career in Fashion is what you are meant to do, but  the path toward reaching that ultimate goal is always, somehow, just out of reach.  I don’t know how many times I wanted to take what I did to the next level … but simply didn’t know how.

[accordion_toggle title=”What’s your dream for your career?”]

[custom_qoute style=”single”]

Being a Fashion Designer is the Dream.  When you look upon your passion as “following your Greatest Excitement”, it is no longer a career … it is a never ending path toward the greatest of potentials and opportunities.   When my designs became popular, I wanted to have my clothes on a runway.  Having experienced my first major runway event in 2012, I am open to the potential of taking what I do to the next level.  Ultimately, who knows … the runways of New York, Paris, Milan are all possibilities … the potential of having a store pick up one (or more) of my designs is equally exciting.  What it boils down to is the simple desire to be open to experience every potential available to me; to be grateful for and enjoy every experience with which I have been gifted thus far.

[accordion_toggle title=”What do you absolutely love about being a fashion designer?”]

[custom_qoute style=”single”]

All of it … every thread, nuance of color, drape of fabric, contrast of textures … the fit, the curve, the cut of a really good design, the feel of the fabrics as they move against your skin.  The very best part is when the whole image that you hold in your mind completely comes together into this beautiful arrangement that is the finished product.

[accordion_toggle title=”What’s the philosophy of your brand?”]

[custom_qoute style=”single”]

Our Philosophy is simple: when it’s time to leave, make sure that what you leave behind is better than what you originally found. As a small business, we support other businesses and artisans like ourselves through the direct purchase of our supplies and materials. The majority of our fabrics are supplied by small stores, located around the world; we actively support global Fair Trade Practices; our trims and yarns and other amazing things come from artisans just like us; our sales are either directly to the customer or available in a local boutique.

[accordion_toggle title=”What about Fashion Week San Diego are you most excited about?”]

[custom_qoute style=”single”]

Participating in Fashion Week San Diego is the next rung on the ladder of fashion design and runway events … it’s like “leveling up” in a video game.  What would be considered the most exciting part are the potentials that await the showcase of this collection.  I have no expectations as to the final outcome … only the excitement of being part of such an amazing event.
