Interview with Wendy McMillian
“What does fashion mean to you?”
Fashion to me is a way to express my creativity. The same way the paintbrush is to a painter. Each dress or garment is an original work of art and a labor of love. Beautiful fashion should evoke a feeling or emotion just like art and I strive to achieve that in each garment I create.
“How did you decide to pursue fashion as a career?”
I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a fashion designer. I grew up with a mother and grandmother that sewed. I remember asking them for fabric but they didn’t want to give me any in fear that I would just waste it. I would take their left over scraps and make dresses for my Barbie dolls. Eventually they realized I was serious and bought me my own sewing machine.
“What’s your dream for your career?”
My dream is to be able to create high-end one-of-a-kind special occasion garments for women as a full time career.
“What do you absolutely love about being a fashion designer?”
I love the process from start to finish; from picking out the fabrics to coming up with the designs and the problem solving in creating the actual garment. And most of all I love seeing the final product on a customer and for her to feel beautiful in my clothing designs.
“What’s the philosophy of your brand?”
The philosophy of my brand is to create unique garments by taking couture design elements such as hand draping or high end materials and making them into a dress a woman will want to wear without being too avant-garde. Each woman is special and I want her to feel that way when she wears one of my designs. I strive for my designs to be unique with a ready to wear elements to them. I want my customer to feel beautiful and confident knowing the fit and craftsmanship is flawless.
“What about Fashion Week San Diego are you most excited about?”
I’m excited to show my collection on the professional runway in the beautiful city of San Diego. I look forward to the promotional events and working with the staff. I think it will be an amazing event.
